In Dwapara yuga, Maharishis realized that yagnja, if started and performed at auspicious time, gave fast and best results. Seeing this success, ordinary people started applying it in their day-to-day affairs. The great acharyas gave some books on this vast subject in Sanskrit. Madhaveeyam of Madhavacharya and Muhurtha Padavi of Mathur Namboodiripad are few of them. In kaliyuga election of auspicious time is much more needed for every important activity. When Well Begun, It is almost well performed too and first beginning of your success is started thereby.
People think it is very simple because muhurthams are written in calendars and in panchangas. But they may not be right for you and therefore should not be accepted blindly. Many ask me for muhur-them on telephone. I do not mind, however, it has a procedure without which required effect is not achieved, Maharishis say. Look at this pramana sloka, which is self explanatory: "devarchabhi niratho japa siddhi mantra: sapthanga dukha guna dosha balabalanja: Mouhurthiko vadathi yatu phalam muhurthe satyam taduktamrushiniva bhaven na mithya:Jyotisastra vidagdho ganitha padu: vrithavanscha satya vacha:Vinayee vedadhyayi grahayajanaparascha bhavanti, Deivagnja". One must approach such a jyotish who has deep knowledge and upasana with offerings (fruit, cloth, thamboolam, supari and dakshina etc) and ask politely "please find out the most fruitful and blessed muhurtham for such and such matter". The time so given will definitely see ultimate success breaking all barriers and impediments.
